3 Conditions for a Great Coworker — What 2,000 Americans Actually Want

Ask anyone what makes a great coworker, and the top answer is usually some version of "collaborative." It's the word everyone reaches for. But it hides a lot.

At Perplz, we kept running into this while researching what makes a high-performing teammate. The data backs up the gut answer, but only on the surface.

In a 2021 survey by CapRelo, 2,000 Americans across all 50 states were asked what traits they most wanted in a coworker. The top four answers: collaborative (35.9%), honest (22.1%), adaptable (14.6%), and communicative (10.3%).

These aren't four flavors of the same trait. Read together, they answer three different questions. Someone we actually want to work with answers yes to all three.

1. "When this person owns it, does the work move?"

This is the honesty layer — but honesty in the workplace sense, not just truth-telling.

A yes here means a person sends consistent signals that they finish what they started. They say yes when they mean yes. They surface delays before delays become surprises. They have a clear sense of where their work begins and where it ends.

The CapRelo data hints at how much this matters underneath the surface: 72% of Americans said they'd worry that things at work wouldn't be completed if they had to step away. The recognition that "we can hand this to them" is the most stable foundation of collaboration.

2. "When this person is in the room, do meetings flow?"

This is where adaptability and communication meet — read together, they're about reading the room and responding to it.

Working well alone and working well together are two different skills. The person who notices whose voice hasn't come up yet. The one who can tell where two opposing opinions are actually agreeing on something underneath. The one who lifts the tempo when the energy dips. All of this comes from situational awareness — what the survey labels as "adaptable" and "communicative."

You can have all the technical expertise in the world, but if this dimension is missing, collaboration feels heavy every time. One person with this quality on a team can change how the entire meeting feels.

3. "When this person is around, do I grow?"

This is where "collaborative" — the top answer — gets its real meaning.

The label "collaborative" sounds like simply playing well with others. But the coworkers respondents had in mind weren't just non-confrontational. They were people whose presence makes you a better colleague.

The one who notices your small attempts and acknowledges them. The one who meets your mistakes with the next step instead of blame. The one who shares their know-how before you have to ask.

That's why "collaborative" came in first. Not because being agreeable wins. Because being someone who makes others better wins.

So a great coworker isn't one mold

Yes to all three questions is what makes someone we actually want to work with. But how each person delivers on those three differs.

Some move work through fast execution. Others through careful analysis. Some unblock meetings by lifting the energy. Others by quietly checking in one-on-one. Some grow their coworkers through active encouragement. Others through deep, slow conversations.
